Applied Behavior Analysis is a scientific, data-driven approach to understanding and intervening with socially significant behaviors to demonstrate a meaningful behavior change. Behavior change can include a reduction in behavior excesses and/or an increase in behavior deficits. Behavior change occurs through procedures of operant conditioning, which includes changes to both the environment and the stimuli that occur before and after the behavior. Behavior Analysts change lives through an ethical, effective, and science-based approach that helps individuals learn the skills they need to achieve their overall life goals and gain independence.
ABA practitioners utilize principals and procedures that are researched, determined to provide significant behavior change, and unique to each client. Unique assessments are determined based on an initial functional behavior assessment (FBA) and structured assessment tools. Examples of structured assessment tools include:
Once assessments have been completed, a behavior plan will be created to meet the client’s needs.
Behavior Analysts have two main teaching approaches: Natural Environment Training and Discrete Trial Training. Both approaches have produced significant modification of the targeted behavior.
Behavior analysts typically utilize both teaching approaches within sessions to produce the most prominent behavior change possible.
