What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis is a scientific, data-driven approach to understanding and intervening with socially significant behaviors to demonstrate a meaningful behavior change. Behavior change can include a reduction in behavior excesses and/or an increase in behavior deficits. Behavior change occurs through procedures of operant conditioning, which includes changes to both the environment and the stimuli that occur before and after the behavior. Behavior Analysts change lives through an ethical, effective, and science-based approach that helps individuals learn the skills they need to achieve their overall life goals and gain independence.

Evidence Based and Individualized Plans

ABA practitioners utilize principals and procedures that are researched, determined to provide significant behavior change, and unique to each client. Unique assessments are determined based on an initial functional behavior assessment (FBA) and structured assessment tools. Examples of structured assessment tools include:

  • VB MAPP
  • ABLLS-R
  • Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS)
  • Essential for Living (EFL)
  • PEAK Relational Training System

Once assessments have been completed, a behavior plan will be created to meet the client’s needs.

What to Expect

Behavior Analysts have two main teaching approaches: Natural Environment Training and Discrete Trial Training. Both approaches have produced significant modification of the targeted behavior.

  • Natural Environment Training allows the child to function in a natural setting while teaching occurs in a parallel manner. Teaching occurs in a less structured environment, however, motivates the child and keeps learning novel and fun.
  • Discrete Trial Training is a more structured approach to teaching which typically occurs in a designated location (e.g. on the floor or at a table) while providing a high rate of opportunities for learning and reinforcement.

Behavior analysts typically utilize both teaching approaches within sessions to produce the most prominent behavior change possible.
